The Municipality of Leichhardt is a local government area in the inner west of Sydney. The name is taken from a Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who mysteriously disappeared while trying to cross Australia in the mid 1800s. The areas under the government are Annandale, Balmain, Balmain East, Birchgrove, Cockatoo Island, Leichhardt, Lilyfield and Rozelle. And these suburbs are mostly off the Parramatta River off Iron Cover where Rodd Island is. Spectacle Island and Schnapper Island are also locales in this area.

The council is made up of 12 Councillors, of whom Rochelle Porteous is the current Mayor. The remaining 11 councillors – Craig Channells, John Stamolis, Frank Breen, Tony Costantino, Simon Emsley, Daniel Kogoy, Vera-Ann Hannaford, Linda Kelly, Darcy Byrne, Michele McKenzie and John Jobling look after 4 wards – Birrabirragal/Balmain, Eora/Leichhardt-Lilyfield, Gadigal/Annandale-Leichhard and Wangal/Rozelle-Lilyfield.

About Leichhardt

The Municipality of Leichhardt was a local government area in the inner-west region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia about 10 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district. On 12 May 2016, Leichhardt merged with the Marrickville Council and the Municipality of Ashfield to form the Inner West Council.

Leichhardt is named after the Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who in the 1840s was feted for his 4,800 kilometres expedition in search of an overland route from southern Queensland to Port Essington, who later famously vanished without trace.

Leichhardt Park includes the Aquatic Centre in Lilyfield, as is Leichhardt Oval in Mary Street, the homeground of the Wests Tigers.

The Bay Run around Iron Cove is famous for cycling, walking and running, passing along the foreshore of Lilyfield and Rozelle, and linking to paths along Hawthorne Canal on the western border of Leichhardt.
