Waverley Council is a municipal council or local government area in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. It received its name from a house in the Waverly suburb which was named after a book by the author Sir Walter Scott. The Municipality was announced and confirmed in June 1859. Its first meetings were held soon thereafter but there were no official office for council duties except in the Charing Cross Hotel and at the Bronte Road School of Arts building until a year later. After the Council accepted a gift from Francis O’Brien of a piece of land for the Council Chambers on Bondi Road the foundation stone was laid in 1860 and the first meeting held there was subsequently held at the end of the year.
The current Mayor of the Waverley Council is Councillor Sally Betts who governs alongside 11 other Councillors over 4 wards namely the Bondi Ward, Hunter Ward, Lawson Ward, and the Waverly Ward.
