Darlington is a suburb that is a part of the City of Sydney local government area. It was first occupied by Cadigal people of the salt-water clans until their people were hit by the smallpox and the majority of them died from the disease. In 1835 a botanist named William Shepherd cultivated a nursery garden which he named after Governor Ralph Darling. The name of the suburb is sometimes taken to be an amalgamation of Darlingtown. Otherwise, it may also have been named for William Vane who was the 3rd Earl of Darlington who was a well known British politician when the New South Wales Colony was still starting up.
A lot of the history of Darlington has been lost making research on the actual history of the suburb difficult. In addition, the University of Sydney has also slowly acquired and subsequently demolished houses in the area since 1960s to expand its campus leading to a substantial amount of historical value truly becoming irretrievable.
