Punchbowl is a suburb south west of Sydney located in the state of New South Wales and belongs to the local government area of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown.
The suburb is named for a circular valley, called “the punch bowl” located in the nearby suburb of Belfield. The first Europeans in the area were of British and Irish decent and arrived in the 19th century. The suburb had by the mid-20th century experienced an influx of migrants of foremost Italian and Greek origin and from the 1970s, became a very popular area with migrants from Lebanon.
Mainly a residential suburb, much of Punchbowl was developed in the late 19th century and early 20th century, most parts of the buildup occurred after the railway line to Bankstown was built in 1909.
The suburbs structural features presents an interesting combination of modern Federation, Art Deco and contemporary homes. Since the turn of the 21st century, certain areas of Punchbowl have also been revamped, with townhouses, contemporary detached houses and flats.
The relatively small but diverse shopping centre, ‘The Broadway Plaza’, opened its doors in 2013, spans over two levels of retail stores and is surrounded by seven blocks of modern apartments.
