Panania is located 23 kilometres inner south-west of the Sydney central business district, a suburb of local government area City of Canterbury-Bankstown in the state of New South Wales.
Once this area was known as East Hills district but in 1929 Panania was proposed along with the arrival of Tempe-East Hills railway line. Panania is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘sun rising in the east and shining on the hills’.
Today Panania is mostly a residential suburb, before 1931 the district was rural but along with the entrance of the railway development flourished, further development of the area greatly increased after World War II.
The suburb has several distinguished places of worship such as St Christopher’s Catholic Church, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney and Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Also noteworthy is the Nurse Schwarzel Fountain on 77 Anderson Avenue which is listed on Australia’s National Heritage List.
Notable residents is Bryan Brown who is an Australian actor with prominent roles in movies including Cocktail (1988) and F/X (1986), he has performed in over eighty projects since the late 1970s.
