Located 12 kilometres south west of the Sydney CBD Lakemba is a suburb in the state of New South Wales.
Originally known as Potato Hill because potatoes were cropped in the area it later became known as Essex Hill Farm and in the 1880s it was named “Lakeba” (pronounced Lakemba) after the Lakeba island, a volcanic Pacific island in the Lau Group of Fiji.
Lakemba has many shops, on and around Haldon Street where a wide range of international and local foods can be purchased. Like most of the rest of Australia, Lakemba has had a diverse demographic history which is reflected in offerings from local businesses clubs and take-away shops. The Lakemba Palms shopping centre, is located on the corner of Haldon Street and Lakemba Street.
The suburb hosts a variety of places of worship to cater for the different. The St. Andrews Anglican Church was built in 1923 whereas the original church was a wooden building it later extended to become the parish hall. There are also several Mosques including the Lakemba Mosque, Ernest Street Masjid and Ahl Al Sunna Wal Jamaah Association Musallah.
