Located 12 kilometres south west of the Sydney CBD Lakemba is a suburb in the state of New South Wales.

Originally known as Potato Hill because potatoes were cropped in the area it later became known as Essex Hill Farm and in the 1880s it was named “Lakeba” (pronounced Lakemba) after the Lakeba island, a volcanic Pacific island in the Lau Group of Fiji.
