Bass Hill is a part of the South-western Sydney region, a suburb of local government area City of Canterbury-Bankstown
, and located 23 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CDB.
The suburb was named after an explorer who was granted land here in 1798.
After the completion of Liverpool Road in 1814 the area developed in a fast pace. Because of the high influx of Irish settlers the area was once called ‘Irish Town’, it was later called Upper Bankstown and finally in 1924 the area got its present name ‘Bass Hill’.
Bass Hill Plaza is the main commercial area, a 20,000 square metres (220,000 sq ft), shopping centre located at 753 Hume Highway. The shopping centre includes roughly 60 specialty stores, a Supermarket, Medical Centre and a Post Office.
Sport enthusiasts will be able to find many options to engage in if visiting the area, hockey, rugby, soccer, athletics, cricket and cycling has great sporting fields and facilities to choose from. An undisputed landmark for this area is Dunc Gray Velodrome, the cycling venue for the 2000 Olympic Games and a part of the impressive Crest sporting complex.
