The Nowra Suburbs are in the South Coast of New South Wales and part of the City of Shoalhaven. In 1824, Mary Reibey, who was an ex-convict looked for land south of the Shoalhaven river but only in 1852 was Nowra officially recognised as a town. The Shoalhaven river remains a big part of life in Nowra and it has hosted the Australian National wakeboarding championships before and it remains a popular spot for fishing. Other notable sports mentions here are the Shoalhaven Rugby Club from where Andrew Walker and Alex Kanaa have come from as well as the New South Wales State Basketball League players, the Shoalhaven Tigers.
The three public high schools are Nowra High School, Shoalhaven High School and Bomaderry High School and there are two hospitals – the Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital which is a centre for Oncology services as well as Nowra Private Hospital.
