Jervis Bay is on the South coast of New South Wales and much of the rock here forms a portion of the Sydney Basin. It is also said to have the whitest sand in the world and as such the area is popular with tourists as well as scuba divers. There are numerous diving sites here which include Ten Fathom Reef, the Labyrinths, Point Perpendicular, a submerged Fairey Firefly aeroplane, a Gorgonian Wall, scallop beds, and Bowen Island. The Australian Navy base, HMAS Creswell, is also located here in Jervis Bay.
The Bay was first sighted in 1770 by Lieutenant James Cook from the HMS Endeavour. But only in August 1791 did Lieutenant Richard Bowe land on the sand and name it for his Admiral – John Jervis
