North Melbourne (is a suburb in and part of the local government area of the City of Melbourne. The suburb sits just 2 km away from the Central Business District. In the 1850s, the suburb was known as Hotham Borough, and this was in honour of the governor of Victoria – Charles Hotham. When the 1887 North Melbourne Town Hall and the Metropolitan Meat Market were completed, the Borough was renamed North Melbourne Town.
The area undergoes ongoing urban renewal and it is noted that a number of buildings are being preserved for their historical architecture. This includes a number of churches such as Curzon Street Church (St Mark the Evangelist), St Mary’s Anglican Church and the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. The North Melbourne Primary School, St Michael’s School and St Alysius’ College are also located in this suburb.
