Albion is located in the North East of Brisbane as part of the city of Brisbane and gets its name from the white sandstone in the area. John Petrie opened a quarry to mine the sandstone in 1860 and a few years later when a hotel on Sandgate Road was established, its name was derived from the word “albus” meaning white in Latin.
Albion Heights and Breakfast Creek are the more famous localities in the suburb and in which there are a number of heritage buildings including the Albion post office, fire station and Hampton Court Flats (also on Sandgate Road). The Breakfast Creek Hotel built in 1889 is also heritage listed and remains popular for tourists.
In addition, the Albion Park Paceway which is a raving track for greyhound racing and harness racing has also made the area popular for that activity. The Smithfield Pony Club is also in the area.
