Fortitude Valley is a suburb in central Brisbane and was once lauded as the largest shopping precinct that was not a CBD. It receives its name in 1849 from the ship SS Fortitude which arrived in Brisbane in 1849. A number of Scottish immigrants from the ship moved to this land area and named it after their ship which brought them here. In the 1890s, 2 businesses – Beirne and McWhirter, opened up across from each other and became keen rivals inadvertently developing the Valley as a centre for trade and economy.

Since the 1990s, there grew more nightclubs and entertainment businesses here including the Brunswick Street pedestrian shopping mall and Fortitude Valley has had a number of campaigns run by the Brisbane City Council amongst the businesses and residents in order to maintain cooperation between the different groups who live and work in the suburb. These include the Valley Music Harmony Plan and the Drink Safe Precinct.
