Marrickville Council is located in Inner West Sydney and gets its name from the “Marrick” Estate which was granted to Thomas Chalder when the Europeans started settling in Australia. The owner of the Marrick Hotel on Illawarra Road, William Dean, is noted to have been the person responsible for adding the “ville” to Marrick when the suburb was marked out in 1861.
The Municipality includes the following suburbs: Camperdown, Dulwich Hill, Enmore, Lewisham, Marrickville, Newtown, Petersham, St Peters, Stanmore, Sydenham and Tempe.
The current Mayor of Marrickville Council is Councillor. Mark Gardiner is the Mayor of the Marrickville Council alongside 11 other Councillors of 4 wards. The Council website boasts Marrickville to contain “the highest percentages of artists, cultural workers and arts industries of any local government area in Australia.” And that might well be true as in March 2011 they hosted the very first local arts tour – the Marrickville open studio trail (MOST) as well as a portion of Art month Sydney. The Sydney Fringe Festival is also held mainly here in Marrickville too.
