Burwood Council is located in Inner West Sydney and is also known as the Municipality of Burwood. Captain Thomas Rowley had established Burwood in 1799 when he was granted a parcel of land which he called Burwood Farm after Burwood Park in England. Burwood Villa which is the first house in the area was built a few years later in 1814 when stagecoaches started making their route from Sydney to Parramatta.
The suburbs under the Council include Burwood itself which is the administrative centre for the council, Burwood Heights, Enfield, Enfield South and portions of Croyden and Strathfield. The Council was set up in 1874 and its Council Chambers on Conder Street were designed by a previous mayor of Burwood – architect Jack Hennessy.
Currently the mayor governing is Councillor John Faker who has 6 other councillors on the council with him. These are Ernest Wong, Justin Taunton, Lesley Furneaux-Cook, Sally Deans, George Mannah and Tony Doueihi.
