Kensington is not to be confused with the suburb in the United Kingdom, but is actually located 6 kilometres from the Sydney CBD and within the City of Randwick in the Eastern Suburbs. In Australia, it is also known in slang as “Kenso”.
During the days when the Europeans started settling in this area, it was known by a number of other names including the “Lachlan Mills Estate”, “Stannumville” and then “Epsom” chronologically speaking. In the late 1880s, it finally took the name Kensington which stuck to this day. Prior to this, the indigenous tribe here was the Cadigal people of the salt-water clans who were part of the Darug language group. To this day, many of them have migrated away and the number of Aboriginals remaining in Kensington are few.
One of the more prominent landmarks here include the Kensington Racecourse which was opened on the present sute of the University of NSW. Not too far away, the Sacred Heart Monastery, the Catholic Missionaries of the Sacred Heart’s Australian headquarters, sits on top of the hill in West Kensington.
