Manly is a suburb part of the Manly Council in the New South Wales Northern Beaches region. It was aptly named for the characteristics of the indigenous people living here after Captain Arthur Phillip was shot in the shoulder by a spear by one of them. Henry Gilbert Smith intended for the area to be turned into a seaside resort, but eventually built a wharf in 1855 instead. By 1873, the wharf was sold to Port Jackson and the Manly Steamship Company.
Manly has a long stretch of beaches from Queenscliff Beach to North Steyne Beach then to Manly Beach. There are rock pools here called the and more beaches on the harbour. On the beaches you can find many Norfolk Island pine trees which are indigenous of Manly. Because of the beautiful beaches there are in Manly, surfing is very popular and the stretch of water between Freshwater Beach and Shelly Beach has been marked as the “Manly -Freshwater World Surfing Reserve”.
